5 Signs Your Marketing Isn't Working (and How to Fix Them)
Most Melbourne service businesses know when marketing is not working because the phone is quiet. The harder part is figuring out why. In our experience, almost every underperforming campaign comes down to one of five problems. Once you name the problem, the fix is usually straightforward.
1. You are not tracking anything
If you cannot answer "where did this enquiry come from?", you are flying blind. No tracking means you cannot tell which channel, ad, or post produced the lead, so you cannot invest more in what works.
- Set up Google Analytics and conversion events on your website.
- Install the Meta Pixel before you run any Meta ads.
- Use a trackable phone number or ask every caller how they found you.
- Record the source of every enquiry in a simple spreadsheet or CRM.
2. Your effort is inconsistent
Marketing compounds when it is consistent. A month of heavy posting followed by three months of silence is less effective than modest, regular activity. The same goes for ads. Stopping and starting confuses the algorithm and wastes the learning phase.
Fix it with a sustainable rhythm. One good post a week is better than ten posts one week and none for a month. Keep a baseline ad spend running even in busy periods, then scale up in quieter months. The businesses with the steadiest pipelines are rarely the ones that spend the most — they are the ones that never stop.
3. You are targeting the wrong audience
A beautiful ad shown to the wrong people is still a bad ad. If your leads are price-shoppers, outside your service area, or not ready to buy, your targeting is off. This is especially common with broad Meta ads that look good on paper but never convert into jobs.
Tighten your audience. Target by specific suburbs, not just "Melbourne". Use lookalike audiences based on past customers. Retarget people who visited your site or watched your videos. For a full guide on local targeting, see our Meta ads in Melbourne service page.
4. Your offer is weak
"Call us for a quote" is not an offer. Neither is a generic list of services. A strong offer answers the customer's immediate question: what will I get, why now, and why you? Examples for trades include "Free measure and quote within 48 hours", "Fixed-price bathroom renovation consultation", or "$0 call-out fee for plumbing diagnostics in Coburg".
Test different offers in your ads and on your landing pages. The one that gets the most enquiries is usually the one that removes the most friction. A strong offer can fix a mediocre campaign faster than better creative can fix a weak offer.
5. You have no follow-up system
Most enquiries do not book on the first contact. If you send one quote and never follow up, you are leaving money on the table. A simple follow-up sequence — a call, a text, a photo of a similar job — can double your conversion rate without spending another dollar on ads.
Make follow-up a process, not a memory. Schedule reminders, use templates, and keep notes on every enquiry. The fastest responder with the best follow-up usually wins the job, even if they are not the cheapest.
What to fix first
Start with tracking. Once you know where leads are coming from, the other fixes become obvious. Then stabilise your effort, tighten your audience, sharpen your offer, and build a follow-up system. Most campaigns fail because one or two of these are broken, not because marketing itself does not work.
